Phthalic anhydride is an organic compound with molecular formula c8h4o3. It is a cyclic anhydride formed by intramolecular dehydration of phthalic acid. Phthalic anhydride is a white solid. It is an important raw material in chemical industry, especially in the manufacture of plasticizer. Hydrolysis, alcoholysis and ammonolysis can occur, and anthraquinone derivatives can be synthesized by reacting with aromatic hydrocarbons. Phthalic anhydride is industrially prepared by vapor phase oxidation of naphthalene and air at 350 ~ 360 ºC under the catalysis of vanadium pentoxide. It can also be prepared by air oxidation of o-xylene.

The use of phthalic anhydride:
