Toluene is a colorless and clear liquid with a benzene-like odor. It has strong refractive properties. It can be miscible with ethanol, ether, acetone, chloroform, carbon disulfide and glacial acetic acid, and is extremely insoluble in water. Its relative density is 0.866. Its freezing point is -95℃. Its boiling point is 110.6℃. Its refractive index is 1.4967. Its flash point (closed cup) is 4.4℃. It is flammable. The vapor can form an explosive mixture with air, with an explosion limit of 1.2% to 7.0% (by volume). It is low toxic, with a median lethal dose (rat, oral) of 5000mg/kg. High concentrations of the gas have an anesthetic effect. It is irritating.
Functions and Uses
Toluene is widely used as a solvent and a high-octane gasoline additive. It is also an important raw material in organic chemical industry. However, compared with benzene and xylene obtained from coal and petroleum, the current production of toluene is relatively excessive. Therefore, a considerable amount of toluene is used for dealkylation to produce benzene or isomerization to produce xylene. A series of intermediates derived from toluene are widely used in the production of fine chemicals such as dyes; medicines; pesticides; explosives; additives; fragrances, etc., as well as in the synthetic materials industry. The chlorination of the side chain of toluene to obtain 1-chlorobenzyl; 2-chlorobenzyl and 3-chlorobenzyl, including their derivatives benzyl alcohol; benzaldehyde and benzoyl chloride (generally also obtained by photogenerating benzene from benzoic acid), are widely used in the synthesis of medicines; pesticides; dyes, especially fragrances. The cyclochlorination product of toluene is an intermediate for pesticides; medicines; dyes. Toluene oxidation to obtain benzoic acid is an important food preservative (mainly using its sodium salt), and is also used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. The intermediates obtained by sulfonation of toluene and benzene derivatives, including p-toluenesulfonic acid and its sodium salt; CLT acid; toluene-2,4-disulfonic acid; benzaldehyde-2,4-disulfonic acid; toluene sulfonyl chloride, etc., are used in detergent additives, fertilizer anti-caking additives; organic pigments; medicines; dyes production. Toluene nitration yields a large number of intermediates. Many final products can be derived from it, among which the most important ones are in polyurethane products; dyes and organic pigments; rubber additives; medicines; explosives. Toluene can react with concentrated nitric acid to form trinitrotoluene (TNT).
